Will the world learn about America’s fear of Israel?
When the details of Israel’s deadly attack on a U.S. Navy. USS Liberty spy ship in 1967 are shared with the public, the world will understand why the century-old America feared the 19-year-old state of Israel, and American history will be rewritten—perhaps even world history.
The USS Liberty Attack: A Disgrace to America
Exactly 59 years ago, Israel attacked the USS Liberty of the U.S. Navy. After a two-hour assault involving rockets, napalm, and torpedoes, a total of 34 American soldiers—most of them high-ranking generals—were killed and more than 170 soldiers were wounded. One of the major attacks concealed by the US is the USS Liberty Attack file. While Israel defended the two-hour attack as a technical error, the US did not share the reports on the attack with the American public.
Although many investigative journalists have pursued why the United States remained silent about this historic attack, it has not become a multi-layered and multi-dimensional agenda item. I wanted us to think together about whether this historic attack did not become an agenda item and was concealed because the interests of the two states were taken into account, or whether it was a dirty deal.
The first question is: Why did Israel, which had been established less than 20 years earlier and was financially dependent on American grants, attack the navy, a symbol of American power? Why did America decide to conceal the attack that killed key generals of the US Army who were on the ship?
In American history, it would have taken months to report on such an important attack, yet mysteriously, it was reported within a week.
Captain W. Boston’s Historic Confession
Thirty years after the attack, Captain W. Boston of the Navy ship stated, “President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered the court to cover up the fact that all the evidence clearly showed that the attack was intentional.”
CIA report dated June 13, 1967: This interim report, completed five days after the attack, stated, “our best judgment is that the attack… was a mistake.” No investigation was conducted, and no first-hand evidence was collected. Then-CIA Director Richard Helms concluded that the attack was planned and deliberate, and later mentioned this in his autobiography.
The most plausible justification for covering up this historic attack is the statement: “If Americans knew the truth about this attack, the Liberty attack could spell the end of Israel, or America could permanently end all aid to Israel.”
One of the questions asked by a Navy commander was, “Who ordered the recall of military rescue support aircraft while the ship was under attack?” This question remains unanswered… We will wait and see if anyone will answer it one day…
With the exception of a few local newspapers, the mainstream media in the United States has ignored the principle of commitment to truth in media ethics and has not carried this story on their front pages. Is this pressure from the American Hawks Group or is it a matter of institutional expediency? This also remains a mystery.
A unique feature of this attack is that it is recorded as the only major maritime incident in US history that was not investigated by Congress.
